Abstract

'The origin of vaccinia virus poses a question for which there is no certain answer? While agreeing with this statement, I hope that the present paper will encourage people to consider the possibilities that a recent specific origin for vaccinia virus is not necessary and that the vaccines used by the early pioneers are essentially the same as those used in the eradication of smallpox.
