Slow viruses and the immune system in the pathogenesis of local tissue damage in Sjogren's syndrome

Abstract

Primary Sjogren's syndrome is a systemic autoimmune disease and there have been many suggestions as to its aetiology. This hypothesis explores the possibility that interplay between slow viruses in the epithelial cells of the exocrine glands and the immune system is related to the cause.
