Abstract

Objetivo: sintetizar la evidencia científica disponible sobre el uso de guardas oclusales y el tratamiento ortodóntico, en pacientes con trastornos temporomandibulares (TTM). Método: Se llevó a cabo una revisión sistemática, analizada en base a los estándares del método PRISMA. Resultados y conclusión: Los TTM se relacionan con factores: psicológicos, maloclusiones o antecedentes de ortodoncia; la conexión entre la ortodoncia y los TTM es compleja no se considera un tratamiento preventivo o curativo, la evidencia menciona que la ortodoncia es neutral con la ATM. El enfoque terapéutico dependerá del diagnóstico, siendo más común métodos conservadores como las férulas oclusales, que han demostrado ser eficaces especialmente cuando se combina con fisioterapia y ortodoncia.Objective: To synthesise the available scientific evidence on the use of occlusal guards and orthodontic treatment in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Method: A systematic review was conducted, analysed according to the PRISMA method standards. Results and conclusion: TMD is related to psychological factors, malocclusions, or a history of orthodontic treatment. The connection between orthodontics and TMD is complex and is not considered a preventive or curative treatment. The evidence suggests that orthodontics has a neutral effect on TMJ. The therapeutic approach will depend on the diagnosis, with conservative methods such as occlusal splints being more common, which have proven to be effective, especially when combined with physiotherapy and orthodontics.
