Abstract

Coping with severe traumatic injury involves three interwoven processes- denial, depression and restitution. Denial and depression are seen as adaptive processes in the appropriate context. A moratorium during the coping process is described; its duration and implications for patient care are discussed. © 1978, International Spinal Cord Society. All rights reserved.
