Perkembangan Wayang Alternatif di Bawah Hegemoni Wayang Kulit Purwa

Abstract

A puppet as a creative art is often interpreted narrowly only in the art of wayang purwa performances which is in the evolutionary span for the centuries has shown as its most adaptive ability. Hegemony of a puppet, as one of Javanese's most valuable cultural creativities, on the other hand, has a negative impact on the evolution of Javanese culture itself. The process of wayang refi nement, as a classical art in the exclusive of cultural sites of the palace, at the same time, faced challenges from the outside which has brought the puppet as a popular cultural product categorized as 'kitch' which was considered merely as invaluable art. The emergence of contemporary puppet works from Indonesian artists signifi es the development of movement in the eff ort to interpret, explore, and develop traditional puppets entering the wider fi eld of arts so that the puppet does not become a static art.
