Abstract

Theoretical background: Resilience comprises factors that promote successful adaptation, alleviate the negative effects of stress and provide the possibility of adaptive coping with the changes despite the potentionally traumatizing and endangering life circumstances. Parenting Resilience Elements Questionnaire (PREQ) is a tool evaluated to measure the resilence of parents. Goals: The aim of the study was to carry out the Hungarian adaption and the psychometric analysis of the 16 item PREQ. Methods: A total of 249 parents participated in the cross-sectional questionnaire survey – a vulnerable group of 65 (mean age – 42.3 years; deviation – 5.66 years) a control group of 184 (mean age – 40.7 years; deviation – 6.01 years) – who filled the following questionnaires: Parenting Resilience Elements Questionnaire16 (PREQ16), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale 10 item version (CD-RISC 10), General Health Questionnaire 12 item version (GHQ12), Beck Depression Scale 21 item version (BDI21), Parental Stress Scale (PASS), Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Results: The confirmative factor analysis proved the 3 factor structures of the original Parenting Resilience Questionnaire on the Hungarian sample and the Cronbach-alfa value of the questionnaire was high (0.842). The questionnaire was in accordance with the expectation regarding the constructs applied for validation and the convergent, divergent, discriminating and incremental validity were all in harmony with the experience specified in international studies. Consequences: All in all, the psychometric indicators of the Hungarian version of PREQ16 (PREQ-H) are adequate, the questionnaire is a reliable and valid measuring tool to assess parenting resilience.
