Abstract

Background and Aim: Mental well-being is a multifaceted concept that has garnered increasing attention in both academic and clinical settings. It is influenced by a range of factors, including interpersonal relationships, self-perception, and environmental conditions. The aim of this paper is to differentiate among three distinct concepts: mental well-being, psychological well-being, and subjective well-being. Additionally, we conducted an in-depth examination of the concept of mental well-being. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across international databases from January to March 2023. The gathered data was then meticulously analyzed using methods for concept analysis by Walker and Avant. Papers were read and analyzed to describe the attributes, antecedents, and consequences of mental well-being. Results: Through a comprehensive review of literature, we found that the key attributes of mental well-being are interpersonal relations, self-acceptance, and purpose in life. This concept's antecedents range from individual expectations and values to broader factors like environment and personal development. Furthermore, the consequences of mental well-being extend beyond individual health, impacting social support, disease risk, and the effectiveness of mental health interventions. Conclusions: Findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of mental well-being, offering valuable insights into both research and clinical practice. Concept analysis highlights the multifaceted nature of mental well-being and provides a foundation for future research and intervention development.
