Abstract

An optimization technique based on unconstrained minimization is presented for automating the selection of a girder cross section, subject to the limits of a complex specification. The technique has the special advantage that the formulation of the structural design canbe separated from the automated optimization part of the program, which can be treated as a closed black- box procedure.
