Abstract

Background. Obesity is a well-known risk factor of many pathologies, including cardiovascular and renal diseases. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has increased markedly in an epidemic way over the past three decades, including a dramatic increase in overweight and obesity among adolescents. Methods. This study is part of the sopkard 15 programme- a comprehensive analysis of the overall health of middle school students in the age range between 14 and 15 years with particular emphasis on the risk factors of lifestyle diseases, Europe for >15 years after political and economical changes in this region. One has to remember that during this time sweeping changes took place in the standard, style and quality of life. Also, reals progress has been observed in medical care and in the availability of modern technologies. In nephrology, it was clearly shown looking upon the availability of renal replacement therapy, which in Poland achieved a level observed in Western Europe at the beginning of the century [10, 11]. Taking into account all these facts it is quite an important issue to establish when kidney pathology begins and how often these factors are present in children and adolescents. such knowledge will be very helpful to establish a preventive programme and start early cardio- and nephroprotective regimens. © The Author 2013.
