Abstract

The metabolism/temperature curve of M. testacea larva changes under the influence of ecological factors such as water-current and substratum. - At any temperature between 5 and 20° C, M. testacea larva absorbs more oxygen when placed in moving water. - When the larva is in experimental conditions which are almost natural (10 to 15°), we observe an insensitivity when the temperature changes to 5° C, and when it is in a water-current. - The absence of any substratum enabling it to move about or to cling (here to a grating), also involves an increase in oxygen absorption. - At 25° C a sublethal tempeature for these larvae, the respiratory mtabolism level does not change whatever the conditions of the experiment. The notion of basic metabolism of aquatic poecilothermal animals is discussed for ecological experiences. © Masson, 1969.
