Abstract

This article examines the safety status of physical infrastructure in chemistry laboratories within public colleges of education in Ghana. As chemistry laboratories are critical environments for scientific education and experimentation, their safety standards are paramount to ensure both student and staff well-being. The study employs a comprehensive evaluation framework to assess the current safety status of chemistry laboratory physical infrastructure across several institutions. Key aspects analyzed include the availability, appropriateness, and maintenance of laboratory physical infrastructure, adherence to safety protocols, and the overall environment’s compliance with international safety standards. The findings highlight significant areas of concern, including outdated physical infrastructure, insufficient safety measures, and inconsistencies in safety practices in the various colleges. Recommendations are provided to enhance safety standards, including increased investment in infrastructure, regular safety audits, and improved training for laboratory personnel. This research underscores the need for systematic improvements to safeguard the learning environment and ensure the effective conduct of chemistry education in Ghana’s public colleges.
