Abstract

Background and Aim: This study aimed to determine the mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) values of intensive care patients, and show the relationship between these parameters and mortality. Material and Method: In the present study, 284 patients who were hospitalized in the intensive care unit were retrospectively analyzed. MPV and PDW values of the patients when they first hospitalized, their last MPV and PDW values before they died or were discharged, their ages and duration of hospitalization were recorded. Results: There was no significant difference between the MPV and PDW values in the group of the patients who survived. Similarly, there was no statistically significant difference between PDWFirst and PDWLast values in the group of the patients who died (p> 0.05). However, MPVLast value increased significantly compared to MPVFirst values (p <0.05) in the group of the patients who died. MPVLast was found to be the most important factor when the age, hospitalization period, MPV and PDW values of the patients, which are associated with mortality, were compared. Conclusion: This study showed that MPV values increased in the patients who died and that they were closely related to mortality.
