Abstract

Water hammer's chief components are pipeline velocity, time of flow stoppage, length of pipeline; varying these factors will vary water hammer potential. Prevention of water hammer in domestic and large installations is discussed. Two methods of calculating water hammer are presented. One is based on pipeline velocity, using pvc pipeline as an example, and the subsequent pressure rise of the valve is closed suddenly, resulting in water hammer. The other formulae is an energy equation for head rise. (S.A.K.)
