Abstract
Some librarians believe that the introduction of automation is leading to the deprofessionalisation of librarianship. Rather, changes in the profession reflect more general changes in knowledge and work that owe to the differentiation and structuralisation of the subject disciplines. This is producing the technocratic professional, who, in the case of librarianship is concerned mainly with providing information services. Such services define the user in terms of abstract categories rather than attempting to foster the values and culture of particular communities. The orientation in school librarianship towards informationism produces problems for the educational objective of cultural renewal. © 1984 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.
