Women Writers in the Debate on the Generation of 1936

Abstract

The concept of ‘generation of 1936’ connects writers who had begun their literary career before the Spanish Civil War but published the major part of their work during the postwar period. Although this concept has been fiercely contested, its specific repercussions for the silencing of women poets (traditionally in the margins of these lists) have not yet been examined. Consequently, this article analyses the debate around the concept to examine the problematic status of Concha Méndez, Ernestina de Champourcin, Concha Zardoya, and, especially, Carmen Conde, and demonstrates its inconvenience in recovering the legacy of these writers.
