Abstract

A physiographic map of Italy at 1:1200 000 scale and a resolution of 0.19 mm/pixel is the most detailed image of an entire nation state yet produced from the technique of digital relief-shading. Ground resolution (230 m) is over three times that of a comparable machine made map of the United States and twice that of a similar map of Sweden. The new 5886 × 4546 pixel image was generated from an 8000 000 point digital elevation model (DEM) of all Italy. The authors assembled the DEM from 280 1:100 000 scale blocks of terrain heights that had been previously digitized every 230 m on 1:25 000 scale I.G.M. contour maps for the Italian Geological Service by AGIP and the University of Lecce.
