Abstract
The perceptions and experiences of pediatric patients and their families regarding the educational process in Hospital Pedagogy (HP) allow for an analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by this service, both in face-to-face and distance modalities. A mixed exploratory analysis was conducted based on participation in a questionnaire and a focus group with pediatric HP users (n = 248) and their primary caregivers (n = 280). The care of psycho-emotional health and teacher attitude emerged as one of the main challenges for service quality. Education in hospital pediatric care is an important element for improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The benefits of digital technologies in facilitating socialization were also highly valued as a significant opportunity. The distance learning model implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic did not significantly differ from in-class care, but family training is needed to properly manage technological tools. The inclusion and normalization of children and young people’s illness in education are opportunities provided by HP within the educational process and relate to the commitment to guarantee quality education for all children, regardless of their circumstances. These findings provide a foundation upon which new educational strategies can be built, based on the identified needs and opportunities, aimed at achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 of the 2030 Agenda.
