Abstract
This article analyses the Spanish and Portuguese expansion from the meridian established in Tordesillas. Since early 16th Century, spatial ocupation reaches disproportionate geographical limits, notwithstanding which the territories are colonized and integrated. This was obtained (also in Asia and Africa) by means of the establishment of urban centers (cities, villas, Indian towns, aldeias) along different phases. It is highlighted the great number of foundations in the Spanish world vis-à-vis the much less numerous -but significant- foundations in Portuguese America.
