Abstract

The aim of the stud The aim of the stud y was to evaluate the haematological parameters of adult albino rats following y was to evaluate the haematological parameters of adult albino rats following oral administration of extract of Momordica charantia. oral administration of extract of Momordica charantia. Twenty male adult albino rats were grouped according to their body wei according to their bod y wei ghts (270±30 ghts (270±30 g). The Group A (control g). The Group A (control ) group was administered orall ) group was administered orall y y with distilled water dail with distilled water dail y for six (6) weeks. Group B, C and D were administered orall y for six (6 ) weeks. Group B, C and D were administered orall y with 125 mg, y with 125 mg, 250mg and 500mg of the extract for six (6 f the extract for six (6 ) weeks respectivel ) weeks respectivel y. The rats were humanel y. The rats were humanel y sacrificed, y sacrificed, blood sample collected was from the heart of the rats, for haematological (red blood cell blood sample collected was from the heart of the rats, for haematological (red blood cell , white , white blood cell blood cell , hemoglobin, l , hemoglobin, l ymphocytes, eosinophil and neutrophils counts) anal sy is. One-way anal ymphocytes, eosinophil and neutrophils counts) anal ys ysis of variance was used to compare the mean of haematological parameters. It was observed that of variance was used to compare the mean of haematological parameters. It was observed that of variance was used to compare the mean of haematological parameters. It was observed that Momordica charantia elevate the white blood cell count when compared to the control group. It Momordica charantia elevate the white blood cell count when compared to the control group. It Momordica charantia elevate the white blood cell count when compared to the control group. It was also observed that the red blood cell count of the groups treated with methanolic extract of was also observed that the red blood cell count o f the groups treated with methanolic extract of Momordica charantia showed no change in value when compared to the control group. There was Momordica charantia showed no change in value when compared to the control group. There was Momordica charantia showed no change in value when compared to the control group. There was increase in lymphocytes and eosinophil count across the groups treated with methanolic extract. increase in l increase in l ymphocytes and eosinophil count across the groups treated with methanolic extract. ymphocytes and eosinophil count across the groups treated with methanolic extract. Conclusion: The Momordica charantia has potential in elevating some of the haematological rdica charantia has potential in elevating some of the haematological rdica charantia has potential in elevating some of the haematological parameters of the treated adult albino rats of the treated adult albino rats Key
