Abstract

Short-term memory is a passive data storage of limited capacity whereas its facet working memory is not only storage-orientated, but also processing-orientated. Received information will make available immediately for other cognitive processes. As consequence of this, working memory is a dynamic system for information processing in which all conscious information comes together. Over the last 50 years, the concept of working memory as originating from cognitive psychology was transferred increasingly in many areas of clinics and education. The hierarchical multi-component approach to working memory in the tradition of Baddeley (1986, 2000) has proved extremely popular. This article will present its ontogenetic development, neuroanatomic and neuronal correlates as well as diagnostics in childhood. Finally, its clinical relevance will be addressed.
