Abstract

The mathematical formalism of contrast variation is presented in terms of an expansion of spherical harmonics. Early attempts of contrast variation in X-ray small-angle scattering are compared with the corresponding more versatile techniques of neutron small-angle scattering. Some applications in life sciences illustrate the power of nuclear spin contrast variation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
