Abstract

Calcium requirement continues to be a very controversial subject. It is difficult to define and hard to measure and there remains uncertainty about the effects of calcium deficiency. These problems arise in part from the slow turnover of bone tissue, which makes the monitoring of both breakdown and repair a long-term procedure particularly when the techniques for monitoring bone status are still relatively crude. The present review will seek to summarize the current position.
