A new genus of baeine wasp (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) from new zealand associated with moss

Abstract

Neobaeus novazealandensis n. gen., n. sp. is described. Collection data strongly indicates that this species inhabits moss-covered ground throughout the North and South Islands. It is closely related to the cosmopolitan genus Baeus Haliday, but differs in its retention of several apparently primitive characters and the micropterous form of the male. The relationships of Neobaeus to other baeine genera are discussed in the light of the high level of morphological specialisation displayed by litter-inhabiting species. A provisional key to New Zealand genera of Baeini (sensu Austin) is presented. Mirobaeus Dodd is transferred from the Tribe Embidobiini Kozlov to the Baeini. Baeus, Hickmanella Austin, Ceratobaeus Ashmead, and Mirobaeus are recorded from New Zealand for the first time. © 1988 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
