Information system: A conceptual understanding for application in business organizations

Abstract

This study aims to discuss the relationship among the various terms and concepts related to information systems presented in the studies on the subject, in order to understand the common and differentiating characteristics among them, in order to facilitate their development and application in organizations. This is an exploratory study, developed through a literature search, which tries to identify a common denominator between the different types of information systems, from the attributes of information. The analysis based on the information allowed the formation of groups of information systems and its result shows that specific usage interests and resources of the Information and Communication Technologies are critical to the variety of terms and concepts attributed to information systems. The conclusion is that different denominations will always exist, so it is very important for studies about the theme to understand and assimilate the characteristics presented by the groups of information systems, which simplifies monitoring and discrimination toward the variety available to organizations.
