Exploring Green Software for Management: Tourism as an Emerging Research Field

Abstract

Green software has become increasingly relevant in the debate on sustainability, addressing the environmental impacts of digital technologies and their application in management. This study investigates the development of research on green software for management through a hybrid bibliometric and systematic approach, focusing on whether tourism emerges as an underexplored research field. Using data from the Web of Science (1991–2024), we analyze publication trends, leading authors, countries, institutions, and thematic clusters. Results show a growing but fragmented body of literature, where tourism appears only marginally yet offers promising opportunities for further exploration. The thematic map reinforces tourism as a potential field of inquiry, highlighting its increasing exposure to sustainability challenges. The study contributes by providing a comprehensive overview of green software research, identifying gaps, and suggesting directions that emphasize the need to expand applications in tourism and strengthen the integration of technology with sustainable management practices.
