Abstract

Liver cirrhosis emerges as the consequence of all major chronic liver diseases. Herein, disease progression is associated with development of severe and life-threatening complications. Malnutrition and sarcopenia are frequently observed during the course of the disease. Despite a clear impact on the outcome of patients, malnutrition and respective consultation are commonly neglected in clinical routine. Ideal management of malnutrition in patients with liver diseases requires profound knowledge of pathophysiological aspects and the associated adverse consequences. This article will provide an overview on the latest aspects, guidelines, diagnostic tools and treatment of malnutrition and sarcopenia in chronic liver disease and liver cirrhosis.
