Abstract
Polyps are swellings arising from the gastrointestinal epithelium. Occasionally, through the action of peristalsis, they may develop a stalk, which can become very long. Polyps with a stalk are called pedunculated, and those with a flat or broad base are termed sessile. Polyps may be single or multiple and can occur at any age, peaking between 5565 years. The majority of gastrointestinal polyps occur in the colon, however, the stomach and small intestine are other sites.
