Abstract

Research and development in artificial intelligence have led to expert systems which are sophisticated computer programs designed to approximate the process of problem solving employed by a human expert. The heart of such a system consists of a knowledge base and an inference engine. The knowledge base is created by collecting information from experts in the field in which the system will operate. XCon, Hiclass and Delta expert systems are described as working examples. The paper presents the development programs in manufacturing as well as the future of expert systems.
