Abstract

The article discusses the adverse effects of the hard economic times on preserving several gardens and parks in California. The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens has reportedly lost 81 million U.S. dollars of its endowments that they are forced to reduce their annual budget and offer early retirement to senior staff members. Also noted is Santa Barbara Botanic Garden which fired ten of their garden staff and the announced closure of the California State Parks Foundation in 2009.
