Abstract

Benefits of silvicultural research on permanent sites are undeniable. The trick is in creating sustainable studies. Many promising programs soon wither. Yet, a few endure. What are the keys to staying power? This paper introduces the problem, discusses three high-profile projects, and suggests ways of establishing field research studies that withstand the vagaries of politics and time.
