Abstract
Lighting is an important element in architectural design, especially for spaces that accommodate reading activities. The role of lighting is to create a comfortable atmosphere in learning, reading and writing activities. This paper discusses lighting in the journal room of the Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) library, especially in the reading area and book storage shelves, to determine the effect of the role of lighting in creating an atmosphere that can provide visual comfort for library room users. The method used is observation and assessment through the study of literature related to this study. The results and conclusions drawn are explained descriptively in accordance with the observations made by the researcher. The role of lighting in the room under study has not been maximized, due to the uneven distribution of lighting, and there is no lighting that gives a visual impression that creates an aesthetic effect. Further research is needed to calculate light requirements and re-design the room to address visual discomfort and meet required lighting standards.
