Generative AI and Cognitive Offloading in Higher Education: Implications for Learning, Knowledge Production, and Academic Thinking

Abstract

The rapid use of generative artificial intelligence tools in higher education has changed the way students retrieve, create, and think with respect to academic content. AI tools, albeit helpful in writing, summarizing, and synthesizing information, are also changing some aspects of the thought processes involved in learning. The purpose of this study is to explore the implications of generative AI as a process of cognitive offloading, in which learners, in essence, push certain parts of the cognitive processes involved in learning to an external device and thus use that external device as an aid in the learning process. This study uses a conceptual and analytical approach to examine the implications of AI offloading as it pertains to learning processes, knowledge production, and academic thought in higher education environments. This analysis also attempts to differentiate productive offloading, which fosters high engagement, and substitutive offloading, which replaces cognitive processes and, as a result, lacks cognitive engagement. This study also explores the implications of AI-based cognitive hindrances that stifle learning, a lack of self-reflective mechanisms to regulate cognition, and the changing degree of authorship involved in academic writing. This study contends that, rather than instituting bans against the use of AI, higher education institutions should, as a first-order priority, focus on the re-engineering of pedagogical and evaluative processes to incorporate thinking and ownership. This paper addresses ongoing conversations about the ways in which universities can incorporate AI technologies while still preserving the fundamental objectives of academic learning by connecting generative AI to larger issues of cognition and epistemic governance.
