Abstract
The area of Sidi Bouzid is currently undergoing a major crisis: the degradation of its natural resources accelerates and the agriculture-based development model is dissipating. The potential risks of opening up Central Tunisian agriculture to competition with better performing production systems could have serious consequences for farming in these areas. This article proposes to compare the logic of the policies implemented in these semiarid zones with strategies developed by livestock breeders to reduce the effects of local natural constraints, particularly the variability of fodder production. This analysis underscores current limitations to the increased vulnerability of livestock breeders to market conditions and other constraints.
