Abstract

Speech act theory and analytical theology are increasingly present in current issues of fundamental theology. The contributions of this theory in the work of J. R. Searle to biblical hermeneutics, to the reasonableness of the act of faith, to justification by faith and to the foundation of sacramental actions are analyzed. The limitations in its theological applications are set out. Finally, it is concluded that the analysis of the act of faith as an speech act must express the ontological dimension of the propositional content and the performative hope proper to the Christian faith.
