Abstract
The analysis of search engine logs reveals an increasing use of spatial and temporal dimensions besides the topical dimension. The integration of these three geographic dimensions into the information retrieval (IR) process has been addressed. Measurement of their quality focuses on efficiency (index sizes and query times). Their effectiveness (i.e., accuracy of results) is not quantified, however. Our proposal is threefold. First, we define a framework for measuring the effectiveness of Geographic IR systems. Second, we experiment it for testing this assumption: combining the three dimensions leads to an improvement. Third, we show that these complement each other, making them worth using in the IR process. © 2011 Lavoisier, Paris.
