Abstract
A new concept of zero-leakage noncontacting mechanical face seal is described. Analysis of the seal performance and optimization of the seal ring geometry are presented. The main features of the new seal is a balance between pressure-induced and shear-induced flows and the simplicity of construction and performance prediction. Design charts for optimum seal configuration are given and the potential of the new concept is demonstrated by numerical examples. © 1984 ASME.
