Abstract

In the run-up to the scheduled ratification of the Kyoto Protocol by 2002, government ministers are being pushed to find ways to curb manmade emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4. Bob Watson, chairman of the International Panel for Climate Change, believes that tackling climate change may even highlight opportunities to address other environmental goals. There are also opportunities for forward-thinking companies to develop more energy-efficient technologies. But technology alone is not the answer. It will need a combination of technology and policy changes. Each country must decide on the most appropriate policies based on national and global needs.
