Bariatric surgery and pregnancy

Abstract

Background: Bariatric operations are increasingly being performed worldwide in women of reproductive age. This moves postbariatric pregnancies, together with the associated therapeutic and diagnostic characteristics automatically into the focus of gynecology. Objective: This article presents a summary of the current state of knowledge on bariatric surgery and pregnancy with appropriate recommendations for action. Material and methods: The most important aspects are summarized against the background of the available literature and the clinical experience of the authors involved. Results: The number of pregnancies after bariatric operations is increasing and in the case of pregnancy requires knowledge of the various bariatric techniques and the resulting therapeutic and diagnostic consequences. Particular attention should be paid to the close monitoring of various micronutrients, whereby the timing of pregnancy after bariatric surgery plays an important role. The diagnosis of an internal hernia after a gastric bypass is demanding and suspected cases should be referred to centers with experience in bariatric surgery as soon as possible. Conclusion: In principle, a postbariatric pregnancy is harmless for mother and child as long as a professional and interdisciplinary care of the mother can be provided.
