Abstract

Vitamin D, a fat-soluble vitamin, synthesised in response to sunlight. The active form is 1, 25- OH 2D. It plays an important role in bone health, serum calcium and phosphate levels. Recent epidemiologic studies have observed relationships between low vitamin D levels and multiple disease states. Low vitamin D levels are associated with osteomalacia in adults, autoimmune and infectious diseases, diabetes mellitus, increased risk of fall and fractures, cancer, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Here vitamin D physiology, metabolism, deficiency and new recommendations for supplementation are reviewed by taking into consideration new findings published in the literature
