Abstract
Single crystalline yellow [Yb(NH 3) 8][Yb(Pyr) 6] (Pyr - = pyrrolate anion, C 4H 4N -) was obtained by the reaction of ytterbium metal with pyrrole (C 4H 4NH) in liquid ammonia at -35°C. Significant excess of ammonia together with avoiding a pyrrole excess prevents formation of the molecular compound [Yb(Pyr) 3(PyrH) 2(NH 3) 2]. [Yb(NH 3) 8][Yb(Pyr) 6] consists of two homoleptic onic units and rapidly decomposes if removed from the ammonia atmosphere, viz. it shows an ammonia vapour pressure >1 bar. © 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
