Abstract

As an introduction to this themed edition on Mobile Systems, an overview is presented of the mobile radio technologies whose development and growth over the past decade have affected the lives of us all. The mobile phone has moved from the executive's trinket to become the essential tool of daily business life. It now sits on the threshold of becoming the mass-market means of personal communication for voice, data and video - all while the user is on the move world-wide.
