Abstract
Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder, increasing in prevalence with age. The underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood. Evidence that ET may be a neurodegenerative condition has been disputed. Misdiagnosis is common with the most frequent mimickers being Parkinson's disease and dystonic tremor. Treatment is often unsatisfactory and it is important to manage patients' expectations. Propranolol and primidone are regarded as first line agents. Alternatives include topirimate, gabapentin and benzodiazepines. © 2011 Rila Publications Ltd.
