An expression relating stress and magnetoelastic anisotropy has been derived for tetragonal compounds. It is shown that the orthorhombic distortion always lowers the anisotropy in tetragonal compounds no matter whether the stress is tensile or compressive. The stress in the Nd2Fe14B grains that is observed by transmission electron microscopy is elastic and of local character near the grain boundary.
