Abstract

This article analyses the emergence and the several uses of “Viceroy of the North”, a phrase attributed the politician and army man Juarez Távora, who had important roles in significant moments of the Brazilian Republic. To understand the formation of this term, it will be investigated its emergence in the post- 30’s immediate context, specifically, the final months of 1930 and early 1931. Later it will be analyzed the consolidation of the term and its constitution as a category policy during the Interim Government, when it was widely used by Távora opponents. Next, it will be observed the new uses that the Viceroy term acquired during the presidential campaign of 1955, acquiring new meanings in this context by him and his allies.
