Abstract
Methemoglobinemia, although an unusual occurrence, should be considered in patients with cyanosis. Arterial blood gas levels, methemoglobin levels, and screening tests verify the diagnosis. The underlying problem is progressive tissue hypoxia, resulting in cardiovascular and neurologic complications. Rapid assessment, anticipation of complications, and appropriate intervention lead to an efficient resuscitation. © 1984.
