Converted P‐waves Originating at the Continental Margin between the Iceland‐Faeroe Ridge and the Faeroe Block

Abstract

P‐waves travelling in the lower crustal layer and possibly the topmost mantle beneath the Iceland‐Faeroe Ridge are observed to travel through the crust of the adjoining Faeroe Block with a velocity not significantly greater than that of Pg. This result supports the earlier inference that a true continental margin of anomalous type separates the thick Icelandic type of oceanic crust beneath the Ridge from continental crust beneath the Block, the phase conversion taking place at the margin. Converted phases of the type observed may have potential for investigating other continental margins. Copyright © 1976, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
