Abstract

Rapid response to a trauma is a predetermined factor in the survival and reduction of the patient’s sequelae. Although the use of the tourniquet has been a controversial topic in first aid, from the evidence there are numerous studies that support, improve and advise its use. Considered a saving measure in triage systems in the out-of-hospital environment, the use of the tourniquet is a well-documented complement that saves lives in both the military and civilian spheres, in addition to decreasing mortality in polytraumatized patients. The use of tourniquets improves the survival rate with respect to direct manual pressure in the hemorrhagic lesión. Direct manual pressure is more effective than compressive bandages and, due to the waiting action of hemostatic agents, these should be used as support for the turnstiles once placed.
