Abstract

The aim of this article is to make a bibliographical review, from studies performed in the last 5 years (2006-2011), to analyse the current trends of the unerupted canines in its epidemiology, aetiology, diagnostic methods, prognostic factors in their alignment; and the various treatment options available. It is especially important because of its relevance in the facial appearance, dental aesthetics and functional occlusion. The diagnosis of the unerupted canine should be made through a thorough clinical and radiographic examination, because it helps in determining the best treatment plan and prevention and/or evaluation of possible complications. Different ways to manage such cases have been suggested from periodic controls, preventing the impaction using interceptive treatment, surgical and orthodontic techniques, and lastly, extraction. Thus, before commencing with any treatment, a proper evaluation of the patient characteristics and the characteristics of the canine should be evaluated to achieve the best possible outcome.
