Abstract
The aim of this experiment was to determine blood profile, differential leucocytes, chromium in blood and blood glucose of lactating cows supplemented with organic chromium (Cr) and Ganoderma lucidum in ration. Fifteen lactating cows grouped and allocated in the five treatments in randomize block design, were fed a basal diet composed of 60% grass and 40% concentrate. Supplementation on basal diet as treatment were: A = basal diet (control = cows not receiving Cr), B = 3 ppm inorganic Cr CrCl3, C = 3 ppm organic Cr (fermentation product of fibrous feed with Ganoderma lucidum), D = Ganoderma lucidum (5 g 50 kg* 1 live weight) and E = Organic Cr + Ganoderma lucidum. Blood profile such as hemoglobin, hematocrit (PCV), red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leucocytes) and differentiation of leucocytes such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes and eosinophils were investigated. Chromium in blood and blood glucose were also determined. The result showed that there were no significant differences on blood profile (p>0.05). Hemoglobin concentration range from 9.33±0.58 to 10.33±1. 15 g/dl. Hematocrit value was 24.33±0.58 to 27.67±2.52%. Erythrocytes count was 6.28±0.73 to 7.14±1.08 million/pl. Total leucocytes count was 7120±1.44 to 9270±2.32/pl. Also, organic Cr and Ganoderma lucidum supplementation had no significant effect on differential leucocytes counts (p>0.05). Ganoderma lucidum treatment gives the lowest count for neutrophils and eosinophils, while combination organic Cr + Ganoderma lucidum give the lowest count for lymphocytes and monocytes. Chromium in blood and blood glucose response in lactating cows to organic chromium and Ganoderma lucidum supplementation were not significant different (p>0.05). Chromium in blood in the treatment of organic chromium was the highest value (1.25±0.92 ppm) while control was 0.58±0.15 ppm. Blood glucose concentration was 52.5±0.28 to 64.12±3.86 mg/dl. It can be concluded that blood profile, differential leucocytes, chromium in blood and blood glucose concentration of lactating cows have not been affected by supplementing organic chromium and Ganoderma lucidum in ration. However, the decreased of total leucocytes and differential leucocytes count in organic Cr+Ganoderma lucidum treatment is related with our previous publication which have shown that lactating cows supplemented with organic Cr+Ganoderma lucidum can improve their immune response by reducing somatic cell count of lactating cow, so lactating cows is not in mastitis condition anymore. © Asian Network for Scientific Information, 2012.
