Abstract

The goal of this study was the development of structure-property-relationships of a new generation of PMMA/layered silicate nanocomposites. The applied synthetic nanofiller offers huge lateral extensions in combination with high aspect ratios and high intrinsic stiffness. The incorporation into PMMA leads, at loading levels as low as &5 vol%, to an increase in stiffness (+ 56 %) and tensile strength (+ 7 %) alongside a significant increase in fracture toughness by 63 %. In contrast to that the natural layered silicate Bentone ® 38 that was used as benchmark system, provides at the same volume content only an increase in stiffness (+ 42 %) at the cost of tensile strength (- 24 %) and fracture toughness (- 29 %).
